Bill Says: Gene's Making My Head Spin

Hi Everyone,

It may be a Kodak world, but unfortunately Gene Simmons is not living in it.

I have to say my head is still spinning from this episode -- mainly because I am trying to figure out why Gene Simmons didn’t bring Nely Galan into the boardroom. I have never seen Mr. Trump try to steer someone in the right direction as much as he did tonight with Gene. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water...

I have to think that the reason why Gene didn’t bring Nely in was because he knew that she would get fired, and Gene was not about to let that happen. Because he was the Project Manager, Gene ultimately felt responsible for the loss and wasn’t going to let one of his women go down for him. I am not saying he accepted the loss, but he did take the responsibility for it and that is commendable. I have to say, I am going to miss watching him and the life he brought to the show.

On another note, I understood Gene’s logic about why he didn’t attend the Kodak executive meeting- he explained himself rather well in the boardroom. He delegated that task to Carol Alt and Nely and they were the ones who didn’t walk away with the “ink” message.

Finally, I think Carol blamed herself for not trying to quiet Nely down during the meeting; but suggesting that Gene bring her back in the boardroom (along with Nely) showed that she may not have a lot of fight in her. It will be interesting to watch Carol as the Project Manager.

Have a great weekend,

Bill

Interesting, Bill--my take was that Gene knew he would probably get fired, and he engineered the scenario so that Trump had to fire him. In other words, he chose to fire himself rather than get fired.

I really dislike GS, but putting that to one side for a moment, I'm with you in being quite surprised that such a successful marketer would go with a bland, say-nothing tag line in favor of a strong benefits-oriented message speaking to the concerns of the consumer. Rookie mistake. (Not that it isn't made all the time.) I don't agree with you that he was right to miss the meeting--The Apprentice is *always* about understanding who your customer is, and he failed to do that. It also appeared that Carol & Nely tried to talk about the importance of the ink message, and he blew them off.

(You never know with the editing of these shows, of course. But that's the story that the episode told, anyway.)

Interesting to read your analysis! Mine is on my blog if you'd like to swing by . . .

Best,
Sonia

I was very surprised with this episode. First surprise: was in the preview Donald Trump says "your fantastic, Your a Champion, O did I mention you were fired". With this quote in the preview I thought for sure the women would have won and either Tito or Lennox would have gone home. Second surprise: that Gene did not go to the client meeting. I thought he would have learned his lesson from last weeks episode. Third Surprise: That team Hydra had accumlated more money then the women in this weeks assignment. When I saw team Hydra's downfall after a coffee spill I didn't think with such a sloppy performance they would sell any printers at all. Fourth surprise: Gene Simmions brings in Omorosa and Jenny Finch. Either Gene was commiting sucide and wanting to be fired or he just was not listening to Donald Trump when he said I would bring back Nely (because he wanted to fire her so bad). It will be an interesting episode next week.

Gene didn't bring Nely in the boardroom because he knew what was afoot! He knew that if he brought Nely in to face Mr. Trump she did not stand a chance. After her blunder last week, the tears after the boardroom, he has no need of her. She will not be the Celebrity Apprentice, and he saw his opportunity to fire her given the clients dislike for her.

The only time I was impressed with Gene Simmons was week 1 when he pulled out his phone and began to call his friends to buy hotdogs. That was powerful, creative, out of the box thinking. Beyond that, he was arrogant and difficult and had zero clue about teamwork. He is brillant and creative and has certainly mastered the art of marketing, but other than that, I was weary of his antics.

And as I stated in Erika's comments, he was weary of the game. I believe he lost interest in this game of Celebrity Apprentice. He made his mark and he was ready to go do something else. He needed an new challenge. He sacrificed himself for the ladies and he has faded into the sunset! Thank goodness.

Let me translate the boardroom with their body language words:

Mr. Trump: "What happened Gene?"
Gene Simmons:"I am fully responsible for failing this task and you should fire me"
Mr. Trump:"I understand that but I want to keep you around, let's find an alternative..."
GS: "I delivered the wrong message and stand by it"
Mr.T:"I heard that kodak's executives didn't like Nely, can we go this path?"
GS:"I am the reason why we failed, if you may"
Mr. T:"Gene, the ratings have never been this high, I need you, just bring Nely in and I will take care of the rest"
GS:" No Sir. I stand by my convictions, I should be fired".
Mr. T:"come on Gene, bring me two, let me help you out... Nely and..."
GS:"I'm sorry Trump you will have to fire me... I will bring only one... the only one that shouldn't be here in first place... this show starts with Celebrity, so Omarosa".
Mr.T:"Gene, don't ruin my show... come on, bring me two... I can take Omarosa and Nely"
GS:"Mrs. Finch"
Mr.T:"God dammit. Now I have no other option. I can't overrule his decisions and my ratings are going down. If I bring her in, I will be a whimp... so Gene Simmons, you are fired".
GS: "thank you mr. Trump, I'll see you in the KISS concert next week"

The only way Nely could have delivered the message to Gene Simmons about the ink revolution should be as follows:
"Gene, Kodak is like a rock band. Every time a rock band goes on tour they promote their latest album. This is not different, Kodak's latest album is called the revolutionary ink savings... it's a mega hit. We promote the latest album among the other hits. It's a win-win situation". That's it, Gene would be able to pick it up.

Honestly, the only interesting part of this episode was when Mr. Trump offered by a surprised Gene Simmons to switch sides. He touched his weakness "you'll be with the women". That was genius. Little he knew what Gene was preparing as an answer in the boardroom. Ok, I'm done with comments...
