Bill Says: No QVC Ladder for Me

Hi Everyone,

I have to say that I would not have chosen the ladder to sell on QVC. Losing the coin toss was a blessing in disguise for Empresario; the vacuum was a much better product and easier to sell. Everyone needs a vacuum—I think I have three of them in my house—but not everyone needs a step ladder. Most times, I just pull over a chair when I need to reach something.

The fact that Hydra didn’t know about the easy pay plan hurt them. I think that, coupled with the poor product choice led to Hydra’s defeat.

Empresario’s QVC segment was like watching something in slow-motion compared to seeing Marilu Henner’s high energy infomercial. Trace Adkin’s voice has such a calming effect—I think he may have hypnotized the viewers.

Stephen Baldwin had a nice brainstorm when he came up with the easy pay system for his team. He is becoming a steady contributor to the tasks each week.

Did you see the previews for next week? Just in time for Spring Break!

I'll agree with you there - that was my thought too - a bigger market for sweepers than ladders; especially moreso than dollies. That they even came close in volume selling a ladder with no EZ-Pay suggests that actually, their commercial was best.
OTOH, I was waiting for disaster for the sweeper bunch - no rehersal, no script. Anyone who's done public speaking must know, 10 minutes is a LONG time. Filling it by winging it? Wow!

I suspect a culture gap with Britain. I'm sure they stopped the cameras and explained to Piers that you don't call a black man "boy" in N. America. He got a few back-pedalling explanations in sideways during the rest of his yammering. I suspect he honestly did not know...

Interesting that Omarosa was a quiet cooperative team member. I'm sure she realizes how close she was to disaster.

LAST WEEK...
I say that last week Piers should have been fired; too bad he won. Omarosa was a royal C***; but...

It's the manager's job to be fair and impartial. It's the manager's job to not respond to button-pushing; it's the manager's job to figure out how to handle difficult people. In the real world, the person of authority represents the company, and anything they say or do in the heat of the moment makes the company liable (i.e. if it came to a physical confrontation).

Omarosa was right from the start - Piers was manager, not her boss. He didn't have the power to fire her, and pushing the issue just demonstrated his impotence. Trump said as much - "one of you should have gone into the park"; he didn't say she was out of line by staying. He was also stupid in pushing the issue without thinking through the end-game - she had the books.

I don't think she's stupid. Piers obviously knew that by setting the only criteria - dollars raised - he was deliberately targetting her. What did he expect her to do? Take one quietly for the team? She fought back.

(The other Piers stupidity... what if she did an excellent job but still raised less money and they lost - Trump would have to decide between the manager who lost and an employee who did all she could.... hmmm).

He didn't think through the other consequence - what if they won? Doh!

Then he tried to stop her from raising money by saying "stop selling tickets" - Omarosa's only way to raise money. Something mor managerial, like timing rides and always having one carriage standing by would have been less provocative. You set dollars as the criteria then stop her from making them???

I think Trump should keep as his "trump card" - he didn't fire anyone this time, later he can fire 2 when he sees the need.

You are really insightful, MD. Thx for your thoughts. I hated to see Marilu go as she is such a sweet gal and gets along with everyone. Even Omarosa liked her. But it is afterall, just a game and should be regarded as such. Piers is there by the skin of his teeth because he stirs the pot and makes this show more interesting to watch. He will not make it. Carol won't either; she's just there 'cause Trump thinks she's pretty. I think Trace will go far, but won't make it; he's not the corporate type and wouldn't be happy doing corporate work. I think Steve looks promising. Everyone likes him and he's just as smart as Piers.
